In North America a “Dominant Shareholder” is defined as an individual, family, privately-held firm, or a government that controls at least 10% of the voting rights of the entity.
At first glance a shareholding of 10% in an entity that gives the owner a dominant position seems rather strange. However, when it is recognized that the shares of most of the large public companies in North America are so widely-held then it is becomes extremely difficult for an investor to control a sizeable portion of any one entity’s shares or voting rights.
