Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! As a native speaker, "driving down" sounds right to my ears, even if not necessarily travelling south on a road. It's just another wonderful example in English of the sometimes nonsensical usage of terms of direction (another example: why do we get "in" a car, but "on" an airplane?). One could also use "going down I-95" to express the same idea. Although perhaps less eloquent or specific, it's very common in the conversational style. Cheers! |
