Spanish term or phrase:canales de conversación (COMMENTS ON USAGE, PLEASE)
I'm doing a back-translation (from Spanish back to English), and I have come across this term where it is obvious that the text is talking about Internat chat rooms. I have never seen "chat rooms" translated as "canales de conversación", and I'm wondering if this was just something inveted by the original translator, or if it is actually used like that in some country.
Has anyone ever seen this before?
CONTEXT: "¡LOL! (Las iniciales LOL las utilizan en vez de decir “riéndome a carcajadas” en los ***canales de conversación*** en la red de Internet). "
I used to use IRC (Internet Relay Chat) around 10 years ago, and IRC is indeed based on channels:
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a form of real-time Internet chat or synchronous conferencing. It is mainly designed for group (many-to-many) communication in discussion forums called ***channels***, but also allows one-to-one communication and data transfers via private message. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat
If you look for "chat channels", there are almost 200,000 hits.
Just to confirm, here's your Spanish expression in a text referring to IRC:
Actualmente, los ***canales de conversación del IRC*** abarcan todos los temas habidos y por haber, pudiendo encontrar canales en los que se habla de los temas más simples, hasta canales en donde los temas de conversación son absolutamente serios y "sesudos". Es decir por hacer un símil, podemos encontrar canales parecidos a las antiguas "party-lines", hasta canales que más bien se parecen a aquellas tertulias de café de los intelectuales http://www.diabetesjuvenil.com/documentos_html/dj_manual_irc...
Thanks Cindy, and also ljo! You both gave the same suggestion, but it was Cindy's references that convinced me. 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer

channels of conversation
Explanation: You need a general expression like the above to encompass chat rooms, instant messaging, and, to a lesser extent, email. I have seen the term used in emails, though those are not quite 'conversation'. Chat rooms however are not the only forums -- instant messaging is very popular (and useful for translations too, if you can get a colleague on the other end!)
