sounds more natural to me in English.

or in a slighly more informal vein "we were hit badly by the strike"

Jenni Lukac: I like both suggestions. For a US audience road hauler or other alternatives would be better: freight transportation strike, trucker strike, haulage strike, road haulage strike ...
