Kenaf, Hibiscus cannabinus L., is a member of the Malvaceae family and is related to cotton and okra. Kenaf is grown world-wide as an annual fiber crop. It grows quickly and can attain a height of 12 to 14 feet in a growing season (4-5 months). Young plants can be used for forage and can be cut and let regrow more than once per season. The stalk contains two different types of fiber, an outer "bast" and an inner "core". The fibers are used separately or together in the manufacture of different products ranging from paper to woven fabrics to industrial absorbents.
