Hi, Charles. Thanks for the explanation! I agree with you, it's likely that "bandeador" is a calque of "bander", as Spanglish is quite frequent in Puerto Rico.

"Bandear" comes to mean stemming because when you've done it you're left with two half-leaves, which can be called "bandas". One of these is used as the binder, the inner wrapper that goes round the filler and holds it together. In Spanish cigar glossaries this is called "capote" or "banda". Then finally the outer leaf, called the wrapper ("capa" in Spanish) is added.

At first I thought the "bandeadora" might be the person who wraps the "banda" round the filler. But this does not seem to be a separate job. It's done by the buncher ("empuñero") who puts the filler together.

It could be a cigar bander, the person who puts bands on cigars. They are often women. In Spanish this person is called an "anillador(a)". But Spanglish is fairly common in Puerto Rico and "bandeadora" might be a calque of "bander". Perhaps cigar making, which is well established in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean with its own terminology, is not a field in which you would expect to find a Spanish speaker using a Spanglish term; if this woman were a bander, she would probably call herself an "anilladora". But it's possible.

However, "bandear" does have another cigar-related meaning, as Pat has shown: it's called stemming, and the people who do it are stemmers. This is on Cuba:

"One of the major jobs held by women in cigar factories is as a stemmer, one who removes the central stem from tobacco leaves."

But "bandeadora" is a plausible synonym, so I think this is probably what it means. You stem leaves, not cigars, but I don't think that's a problem; "de cigarro" would simply mean "in the cigar-making process"

I've had another look and from what I have see, both jobs are typically done by women and are part of the process of cigar making. I can't find any mention of the term " bandeador de cigarro" either. Maybe somebody from that part of the world will be able to shed light on this.
