Explanation:
A wordy translation, but "propitiatory makeup" doesn' seem to work here. Apparently the custom of the people concerned required that enemy soldiers vanquished in battle have their faces made up in a particular manner.

Muito's answer is on the right track, but misses the fundamental idea of the makeup being applied in order to propitiate the gods.
