Spanish term or phrase: letras quebradas
I've found "blackletter" or "Fraktur" as possible translations for this, but I believe both refer to typefaces and not to handwritten letters. Also, "blackletter" is a synonym for "Gothic" so that also makes me think that this may not be the right translation (def: a style of type or lettering characterized by a heavy face and angular outlines and used chiefly by the earliest European printers or sometimes for the printing of German -- called also Gothic, Old English). The passage is talking about indigenous codices in Mexico.

Fraktur / Fraktur script
Explanation:
I checked my copy of the oh-so-great "The Elements of Typographic Style", by Robert Bringhurst (you could call it THE bible of typography), and it confirms that Fraktur is a class of blackletter types.

As for your concerns regarding manuscript type vs. artificial typefaces, after all, consider that the first printed books were of religious content; the printing press was destined to replace manuscript codices, thus the first typefaces were based on the handwriting of said codices.

Thank you for sharing the good links and confirming that I can use this. (fwiw I'm leaning a bit toward "blackletter" since I'm not sure the US audience will understand "Fraktur").
