Spanish term or phrase: precede a una clara división del espacio
This is a discussion of a 16th c Mexican codex. If you're tempted to answer something like "introduces a clear division of space," would you please include in your answer how that fits with the rest of the sentence? ;-)

Señala que la escena central, donde aparece el Cerro del Chapulín, precede a una clara división del espacio que los mexicas llevaron a cabo después de cruentas luchas, mismas que quedaron plasmadas por medio de los personajes ensangrentados al pie del cerro.

predates a clear gap [in time]
Explanation:
As I understand it, there is a gap (clara división) in the records which appear in the codex.

Asker: Did you see my note above? precedes (not preceeds) -- I know the meaning of the words, but what sense do they make in the context of the sentence? Thanks...

Asker: Thank you so much! Your interpretation is how I read it (except I think precedes would work better than predates), but not being a native speaker I didn't want to "overstep"!
