Spanish term or phrase: tomando las amas
Los cuales bailaban hasta buen rato de la noche, donde, después de haber cantado y bailado, con mucho contento y regocijo, se apartaban, ellos a sus lugares, y ellas, a los suyos, y tomando las amas, las llevaban a sus casas, haciendo lo mesmo los viejos con los mancebos, dejándolos en sus casas y entregando a ellas a sus padres y madres, como dicho es, sin lesión ni mal ejemplo ninguno.

This is what I have, but I really don't understand the "tomando las amas" part:

They danced a good part of the night, and after having sung and danced, greatly contented and full of joy, they parted ways, the young men to their places, and the young women to theirs, and the mothers took the girls home, and the old men took the young men, leaving them in their homes and delivering the girls to their mothers and fathers, as is said, without any harm or any bad example whatsoever.
