Hello- I studied archaeology and I confess I have a little trouble understanding it. I am unsure as to what the rest of the text says - but could it be that they took two actions for chemical analysis. One of them was to take random samples across the site, establishing arbitrary levels of 5 cm for the analysis. And the other was to analyse the soil in the grids, not taking arbitrary levels for the analysis, but rather analysing the real stratigraphic layers one by one (not at arbitrary levels of 5 cm, but rather as distinct stratigraphic layers). Not sure if that helps?

Dado que el método químico debe ser aplicado in situ contempló distintas etapas, diseñadas a modo de priorizar técnicas de bajo costo y replicables por arqueólogos. Esto último es especialmente pertinente, pues se trata de incorporar estos análisis químicos al entendimiento metodológico en terreno de los procesos de formación de sitio. De esta manera se comenzó con el muestreo y análisis de los sondeos de muestra-control, donde se establecieron niveles arbitrarios de 5 cm. En cambio los sedimentos de las cuadrículas arqueológicas, tomadas y analizadas posteriormente, consideraron los estratos naturales cómo unidad de análisis.
