Explanation:
I think what they may be referring to here are performance and public spaces. These could have been spaces for the performance of rituals as well as theatrical or other public events. Especially as they are talking about insulae which are blocks of buildings in Roman camps or towns arranged in a grid pattern.

For instance in:
We decided to run a major trench right through from what was apparently the upper part of the seating, down through the wall, to determine the level of the flat performance space below.

neutral  Jim Tucker: Any solution here would have to be paired with espacios publicos. Also this is presumably about the ancient world. //Then there is some misunderstanding here. "De representation" and "publico" are 2 different types of spaces that are joined, not 1 kind.

Como aquella sociedad funcionaba sobre criterios de jerarquía y estratificación, eran precisamente los recintos de los ludi uno de los "espacios de representación" donde la superioridad de los grupos aristocráticos se ostentaba mediante diferentes signos de estatus, cuya expresión física el poder reglamentaba penando las usurpaciones (Reinhold, 1971). Uno de los más significativos eran las reservas de asientos. En los espectáculos convergían todas las categorías sociales, cada una se exponía ante las demás en armónica y civilizada convivencia, pero también se visualizaban sin tapujos las desigualdades existentes entre ellas. El gaditano Balbo, para atraerse a los equites (caballeros) de Gades, un selecto estamento, les reservó en el 43 a.C. catorce filas en el teatro local, aplicando un precedente legal, la denominada Lex Roscia Theatralis del 67 a.C. vigente en Roma, reservándose a la aristocracia de los senadores la orchestra.
