Architecture
Spanish term or phrase: disciplinar
Hello. This is from a text about the restoration of an old church, northern Spain. I have never seen this word applied to inanimate entities. Any ideas?

Thanks for your help

agree  YP - idiomatica: Pues sí, algo así. Estos usos de "disciplinar" no son muy ortodoxos, por no decir además que son bastante pretenciosos, así que lo mejor es traducir como uno buenamente pueda, explicando el significado que se le ha querido dar al término.

Explanation:
I like 'govern', as suggested above - it was the first term that occurred to me. I think you could also get 'conform' to work with both these sentences.

the objectives and criteria which all work must conform to (or similar)
autonomous planes which conform to a structural steel grid

set the parameters for

Explanation:
all aspects of the restoration were undertaken in accordance with the aims and criteria of the project- its parameters.
However the second example needs a different verb, as this is a more concrete relationship: eg 'the walls and floors were set within/framed by a steel structure'

Sorry, example sentence should read "As architects we are given..."

Example sentence(s):
  • Architectswe are given certain project parameters that help guide the direction of our projects. We are then given the freedom to pursue the artistic embodiment of those parameters.
