I'm fairly certain that the amantes are those wealthy women who were Diego's lovers (not the lovers of the bankers, etc.)

| Note from asker to answererSinead and everyone: Thanks for your suggestions. I ended up using "Not counting lovers!" because I just couldn't see that this made sense any other way given that he was always painting the women he slept with. (Hope I haven't made a terrible error!). Anyway, to Sinead go the pts. for getting the most agrees (and for a clever answer that fits with "abstenganse").
