Description of a mural depicting a battle scene. Context: "Los colores aplicados a la cola, se velan, casi siempre de oscuros sobre claros. Aunque como en el caso de las velas de los barcos, es al revés, primero se pintarán de oscuro las superficies destinadas a las velas, y luego, mediante una veladura blanca, más o menos densa, se modelarán." The term 'velar' and 'veladura' occur frequently in this text, and I'm wondering whether it refers to a transparent layer/a thin wash of paint?

On ktb's question:
Regarding 'veilings' and 'to veil' ---they seem perfectly all right to me and they are used by watercolor artists. Probably they are also used by painters using oil and acrylics. In Puerto Rico veladuras is the word of choice among both Spanish and English speaking painters. I would think veilings is favored elsewhere by contemporary anglo artists.

Thanks for your help. The technical term is velature, which elsewhere I've now seen described as a type of glaze or glazing tecnique (but using tempera), so really both answers are right...I've also seen 'veilings' and 'to veil' in an IT-EN dictionary - would you agree with this?

Definition:
The term used for a thin, transparent layer of paint, particularly in oil painting and acrylics. Glazes are used on top of one another to build up depth and modify colors in a painting. A glaze must be completely dry before another is applied on top.
