I dont need all the details, just the briefest of descriptions ('positioning') of this party in terms of Spanish national politics (I have described the PP as centre-right governing party, PSOE as socialist/main opposition party, and IU as 3rd party in terms of voter preferences).

I haven't heard of the New Left - are they based in Andalusia, Almeria, by any chance?

Explanation:
taken by the minority splinter group that often dissented with Izquierda Unida in the past. To differentiate itself from the old PC (Communist Party), it took the name Nueva Izquierda. As such, it dates to the conflict between the Sec. Gen. of IU Julio Anguita and Cristina Almeida, once his right-hand woman. Cristina proclaimed NI as an alternative WITHIN IU, but as the rifts became greater, Fco. Frutos took advantage to declare a practical secession. Right now, they're still united, but with the strains on the issue of electing a new Sec. Gen., its anybody's guess how long this will last.

Nueva Izquierda

Designación del conjunto de agrupaciones heterogéneas por sus concepciones filosóficas y su orientación política, que surgieron en los años 60 y 70 del siglo XX. En su mayoría está integrada por estudiantes e intelectuales y se nutre de los "nuevos pobres".

Estos grupos hacen la crítica de la desigualdad social, el aplastamiento de la personalidad, la explotación creciente, el consumismo, la degradación moral que son propios a los países desarrollados. A la vez, critican a los comunistas por su burocratización, antihumanismo y corrupción.

Una parte de la n.i. abrazó los métodos de la violencia y practicó el terrorismo. Ciertos grupos se desviaron hacia el nacionalismo, el racismo y el fundamentalismo religioso y hasta se aliaron con las bandas neonazis.

Otra parte buscó la salida de la crisis global en el resurgimiento del anarquismo. Algunos grupos se incorporaron en los partidos socialistas y social-demócratas, otros en las organizaciones y movimientos ecologistas, feministas y juveniles.
