agree  Tecpatl: I used it to translate "maroon" at a UN conference (they have traditionnal knowledge patent rights problems in Jamaica. One of them became the king of the 1st independent state in America, here in Mexico. )

I have the following suggestions:

1. Cimarron when referring to people means wild or untamed.

2. Cimarron is a runaway slave or other wise maroon

Your title could be: Maroon: A Slave's history

I hope this helps you.

Ihave a question, is the term being used as a proper name?

If so, you should leave it as Cimarron and not translate it.

proper name...or, read on...

Cimarron seems a proper name here. In some other contexts, other than Runaway, it was also used to describe a special type of \"picardía\" : \"negrito cimarrón\" (smart-assed, pardon me!)among the slave populace.

Runaway: Story of a Slave

The slave in the story is named Estéban Montejo, not Cimarrón. I would translate the title as above.
