Coyoacán y Monterrey (México)

English translation: barrio/ciudad

Spanish term or phrase: Coyoacán y Monterrey (México)
Here is the original sentence:

"...los ridículos que habitan por igual el sentimentalismo de Coyoacán y la ostentación de Monterrey"

From context I guess these two are either authors whose world view is reflected in these adjectives.. or else barrios de Ciudad de México.. or cities???

Can anyone with experience of México help me make the right choice here?

English translation:barrio/ciudad
Explanation:
Coyoacán is indeed a barrio in the south of Mexico City. It is 'el lugar de los coyotes' and used to be a small village that became part of the city as it expanded into the 'monstruo' it is now. It is a place where cultural life is flourishing and a lot of artists live there (although nowadays there is a bit of a shift to another barrio)
Monterrey is a city in the north of the country and it is one of the most affluent cities of the country. The people who live there are said to feel superior to the rest of Mexico and that is why they are sometimes made fun of.
Hope this helps.

Thanks. I am sorry to see there are North/South divides within Mexico itself ;-)

Your explanation fits the context and gave me an idea for a slight rephrasing.

Hope I can help you out someday over obscure Brtish references.

Explanation:
From your e-mail adress I guess you live in Spain, so to give you an idea, Monterrey is the second or third most important city in the country (picture the industrial power of the Basque region mixed with the Barcelona people's attitudes) and Coyoacán would be a mix of El Rastro de Madrid on Sundays full of PSOE people. That's what it is. Sounds like what you're translating now is more interesting than the Copa del Rey, isn't it?
Good luck with it

Just to clarify

Explanation:
Coyoacán is a "colonia" not a "barrio", and it is where mostly bohemian individuals concentrate...the highlights, the downtown area of Coyoacán on weekends, where art, jewelry and other accessories are sold, the bar, the church and the cobble stone streets and the restaurante Los Danzantes. Monterrey is a city, quite industrialized, and one of the largest cities in Mexico, next to Mexico City and Guadalajara. The ppl there, aside from thinking they are the next best thing to sliced bread, are notoriously famous for being cheap...

Best of luck!

Coyoacan and Monterrey.

Explanation:
Coyoacan is as it has been explained before, a section of Mexico City, where art, is important. So they day dream most of the time. As regards Monterrey, I am from Monterrey, and it is in the Nothern part of Mexico, and it is distinctive because people work much more than in other states of this country, consequently, have more money. But we are not cheap. That is only what Mr. Padres think.
