Spanish term or phrase: el genio de la raza
Title of a painting, by Domingo Sequeira (Portuguese): "El genio de la raza defendiendo Religión, Trono y Patria." It apparently refers to the French invasion of Lisbon. I'm not even sure what they mean by "genio de la raza", let alone how to translate it! Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks!

SPIRIT OF THE PEOPLE
Explanation:
There are so many synomyms in English for both words ["genio" and "raza":

genio = genius, temper, mood, talent, character, spirit, etc.
raza = race, people, breed, etc.

However, given your particular context, I'm inclined to believe that your best bet (in a literary sense) would be:

"the spirit of the people"

Hope this helps:-)

the genius of the race

Explanation:
genius must be interpreted according to its latin origin: innate character the painting must convey the image of a nation's character
ex: the genius of the french language (its nature)
it could be the spirit of the race/nation too
just ideas
good luck

Terry Burgess: Too literal!, plus, "genius" doesn't apply in the asker's context.

spirit, nature, character

Explanation:
genius-Exceptional intellectual and creative power. A natural talent or inclination. The prevailing spirit or character.

I believe the painter is refering to the fighting spirit of the people.
Here's what I found:

De la conquista de la India por los arios salió una de las más brillantes civilizaciones de la tierra.. Por una parte, el genio de la raza blanca con su sentido moral y sus sublimes aspiraciones metafísicas y por otra parte, el genio de la raza negra con sus energías pasionales y su enorme fuerza.

I'll go along with "spirit of the race"

Explanation:
Not much found on Sequeira except his period (Romantic, a contemporary of Goya). This would likely have political significance.
