vacuoles

Explanation:
I think that it is likely they are referring to vacuoles here.

Large **clear, round vacuoles** representing distended lysosomes were present in many epithelial and connective tissue cells
http://www.vetpathology.org/cgi/content/full/37/5/502

Vacuolation of neurones is most prominent in the medulla, pons and mesencephalon, and is found less constantly in the cerebral cortex, cerebellum and spinal cord. Single or multiple **vacuoles** may occur, often causing ballooning of the nerve cell.

With a little more context, I might be able to say with more certainty.

The abundant cytoplasm quite often **contains vacuoles (small, clear areas)**
http://faculty.une.edu/com/abell/histo/histolab3a.htm

cells showed larger **vacuoles** that often gave the impression of coalescence into extensive **clear areas of cytoplasm**

Just came across some descriptions of vacuoles that fit a bit with your authors ie \'clear areas\'.

I\'d confirm the term with them though, with more context there will almost certainly be something specific for what they want to describe.

All the best, Iain
