Espadañal o tular. Ocupan más de dos tercios del área, crecen sobre suelos permanentemente inundados y constituyen la comunidad más extendida dominada por espadaña (Typha latifolia). En la zona de transición con el manglar se asocia con el helecho Acrostichum aureum y en áreas menos inundadas y en transición con el tintal es desplazada por el chaparral de Mimosa pigra y por el chintul (Cyperus articulatus) (López Mendoza, 1980).

Popal. Dominado por el popoay u hojilla (Thalia geniculata) que forma masas puras de 1 a 2 m de altura. Otros elementos que se asocian al popoay son el tanay (Heliconia latispatha) y el molinillo (Cyperus giganteus) (Ramírez, 1985).
