Spanish to English translations [PRO]
Bus/Financial - Business/Commerce (general) / Annual Financial Report
Spanish term or phrase: accion/participacion
I'm translating into UK English and realise that stocks and shares are pretty much synonymous but can anyone tell me the difference between the terms *acciones*and *participaciones* in the paragraph below taken from a company's annual financial report - i.e. is the capital made up of 'stocks, not shares' or 'shares, not stocks' (or something else entirely?). Thanks
ADQUISICIONES DE PARTICIPACIONES PROPIAS
No se adjunta como anexo comunicación respecto a los negocios sobre las propias accions, de acuerdo con lo dispuesto en el articulo 97 de la Ley del Mercado de Valores, por tratarse de una Sociedad Limitada con un capital compuesto por **participaciones y no por acciones.***

share/interest (or) holding (see explanation)
Explanation:
If this is for Spain, "acciones" are shares in corporations/public limited companies ("sociedades anónimas"), while "participaciones" are shared in limited liability companies/private limited companies (sociedades de responsabilidad limitada). Since the Spanish Limited Liability Law prohibits members' interests in the company from being called "shares", their "participaciones" must be called something else.

(additional info)

Definition of "sociedad (de responsabilidad) limitada":
La sociedad de responsabilidad limitada se presenta como una sociedad de tipo capitalista en la que el capital social está dividido en participaciones iguales, acumulables e indivisibles, que no pueden incorporarse a títulos negociables ni denominarse acciones, y en la que la responsabilidad de los socios se encuentra limitada al capital aportado.

Definition of "sociedad anónima":
La sociedad anónima es una sociedad de tipo capitalista en la que el capital social se encuentra dividido en acciones que pueden ser transmitidas libremente, y en la que los socios no responden personalmente frente a las deudas sociales, (art. I de la L.S.A.)

I have seen "participaciones" translated as "participations" "holdings" "member interests", etc. To my knowledge, there is no "standard" translation.
