unclaimed (liquid) property

Explanation:
When someone dies and there is no heir or beneficiary to be found, the state takes possession after a certain period of time and again holds it for a specified time. If no heir or beneficiary is found, it then becomes property of the state.

In California, it does not include real property, but could be cash, stocks, bonds, insurance polices, contents of safety deposit boxes, etc.

When someone dies in Spain the law is that the inheritance claim must be made withinsix months of the death. This involves preparation of a notarial deed by the next of kinaccepting the inheritance and the liability of the taxes which will be applied as a result.

disagree  AllegroTrans: all possessions are (or at least should be!) "legal" but the context here is specifically possessions relating to intestate estates, i.e. that have not been claimed
12 hrs
-> Posesión efectiva means the property of a decedent that can be inherited by the claimants (descendants). I put "legal" because I couldn't find the exact procedure (concept or definition) in the english language, and legal meant taxable estates

disagree  traductorchile: Actual possession = posesión de hecho, La posesión efectiva es un trámite legal y en el contexto se refiere a un registro relacionado con ese trámite en cuanto a una herencia intestada
15 hrs

disagree  AllegroTrans: These are not "actual" possessions at all - they are possessions held in trust for an intestate estate
