Spanish term or phrase: jornada intensiva
Living in Spain I know what this means but am at a loss as how to say it: Jornada completa a turno partido. Jornada intensiva en verano y los viernes de todo el año.
I have "full day with lunch break. Long morning only in summer and Fridays all year round" but it doesn't sound appropriate. Any ideas?

morning shift/early shift

Explanation:
Common in Spain in summer, they only work until lunchtime i.e. 2 or 3 pm, and have the rest of the day off. Sometimes they may start earlier, for example at 7 am instead of 8 am to compensate.

block shift

Explanation:
As opposed to "split shift" - maintains same term "shift" in both cases. Another idea might be "straight shift" or "block shift" but they seem to be synonyms.

Sorry, I meant "continuous shift" instead of the second "block shift" in my explanation. :)

Example sentence(s):
  • A typical split shift could be 8 am to 1 pm and then 4.30 pm to 7.30 pm.
  • A typical straight shift would be 8 am to 5 pm.

working day with a short break or no break for lunch so as to finish earlier

Explanation:
It's bit of a mouthful, but that's exactly what my Oxford Spanish Dictionary (4th ed, 2008) says it is and how I've always understood the term - a "continental" working day.

I would turn the sentence round to something like: "On Fridays and in summer staff work with a short break or no break for lunch so as to finish earlier."

Hope that helps.

Explanation:
I think what's happening here is that you're looking for a good translation whereas what you need is a good <B><I>explanation, which you already have. I would only suggest the following small changes: "Full day with lunch break. Long morning shift on Fridays year round and throughout the week during summer"

This means that the same amount of hours are worked, but due to such a short lunch break, the company closes earlier. In Spain, the lunch break can be up to 3.5 hours.

compressed working day

Explanation:
Form of working in which daily working hours are not interrupted by a lengthy break for a midday meal. Where such a working day exceeds six continuous hours (or four and a half hours in the case of employees under the age of 18), Spanish legislation prescribes a minimum rest period of 15 minutes (30 minutes for employees under the age of 18) called descanso del bocadillo , i.e. "tea-break", which is deemed to be working time if so stipulated by the parties to the collective agreement or contract of employment. This type of working day is common in certain types of work or activities (particularly in the service sector) and is the norm in the case of shiftwork . It is in contrast to the jornada partida (split working day), which is still typical of agricultural labour, shop work and small enterprises. The continuous working day that is shortened at certain times of year (summer) is called jornada intensiva (compressed working day).

If it's for an advert, then there's no point guessing. Why not ask the client exactly what the hours will be in the summer (and the months this will cover) and say:

June-September 8:00-15:00 (or whatever)

a full, split shift

Explanation:
jornada completa = full day's work

a turno partido = split shift

--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 8 mins (2009-01-27 15:52:45 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------

Since a split-shift normally implies a much longer break that just a couple of hours for lunch, "split-shift" may or may not be appropriate. It would good to have a little more context.

Another (perhaps safer) option might be "a full day's work/complete shift (with a lunch break)."

--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 1 hr (2009-01-27 16:44:18 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------

Since, as several people (living in Spain) have said, the day starts at around 7:00 and ends at around 2:00, another option might be "an intensive, early-leave day/shift"; this way, we convey the idea of it being an "intensive" (i.e., complete) work day.

jornada intensive = intensive, early-leave shift/day

Other options might include "an intensive, early start/early leave (schedule/hours)" o "an intensive, early in/early out (shift)"

jornada intensiva = intensive, early-leave // intensive, early in/early out // intensive, early start/early leave (shift/day/schedule/hours)

I hope this helps!

FINAL POINTS & SUGGESTION:

From all the comments, it's clear that the "jornada intensiva" varies in number of working hours, depending on the company. That said, there appears to be just one thing that remains the same in all cases: workers leave earlier than usual.

FINAL SUGGESTION:

EARLY-LEAVE DAY
