prestatario de servicios y proveedor de servicios

And this has cropped up again the translation I'm doing today. The context "de carácter logístico con prestatarios y transportistas" seems to point to meaning a service provider, which is the translation I'm going with, although in most of the dictionaries I consulted its defined as "borrower/debtor"...

I have translated documents myself where "prestatario" did mean a service provider, but in each case I had to check with the client to make sure, since the standard and dictionary definitions are all "borrower" or similar receiving parties.

the usage seems to agree with Jenny's suggestion. However, despite subjetive/unsubstantiated disagrees to the contrary, this is is not the most common use, at least in Spain, where the dictionary definition/s is/are based on the notion of receiving rather than providing. Which is why this is an interesting post and thus pro level IMO.

Since "prestatario" can mean "borrower", it would seem that its the one who is receiving/benefiting from the services. However, I think I have seen it translated as "service provider". Interesting one!

Prestatario doesn't mean "recipient". Both prestatario and proveedor mean the same thing, and it's difficult to provide adequate translations without seeing the whole contract - though it looks like the main contractor/subcontractor idea may be correct.

Prestatario (borrower) -> Persona que recibe (dinero). However usage may vary by regions, I'd check with the client if it's a contract ... "por si las moscas". And I'd be wary about tagging it as applicable as a general rule between contractors and subcontractors, since in Spain they are usually (sub)contratista and the apparent usage here as subcontractor of the "proveedor de servicios" could give rise to confusion IMO.

Jenni, I think you may be right. The once company (proveedor de servicios) is in charge of the comprehensive management ... and the other company, the "prestatario de servicios" has the necessary knowhow, expertise, etc., to actually perform the services, meaning that in at least this case the "prestatario de servicios" would be a subcontractor of the "proveedor de servicios".

I wonder is this is applicable as a general rule between contractors and subcontractors tha render services in Spanish, that is, "proveedor" as the service contractor, and "prestatario" as the subcontractor.
