I save myself a lot of trouble by stipulating : "No se puede garantizar las traducciones de abreviaciones y/o acrónimos que no hayan sido definidos en el texto original, excepto los más comunes." I don't see ANYTHING odd about this, nor do most clients.

Thanks, Phil, I am seeing quite a few instances of "ORI No." all over Google, always involving official letters being sent to bureaucracies. I never see it expanded, though. My take is that it is a bureaucratic construct not related to the nature of the ministry. Of course, I could be wrong, and either way, if I find out the answer, I'll post it here.

You're being so cagey that you're basically telling us nothing! I suggest you either just translate it as ORI or ask the customer if you feel it's important.

Hi Phil, Thanks for being willing to help me out here. It is a one of several letters from a ministry to an international governing body reporting on some situations they were working on together. I am a little nervous about saying more than that. Any other similar letter I have ever worked on would say "Oficio No. ###" but this one is slightly different.
