Though not very common here in the US, the term "letters" is definitely used in the context of higher education and intellectual achievement in the English-speaking world (as the following links suggest).

As for "Science and Arts" (or the other way around), the term "arts" would appear to encompass more than just literature (and the humanities) and, as such, may not be appropriate.
