Spanish term or phrase: de oficios domésticos

I know that this term has been listed in the forum already, and that the translation was rendered as “housewife.” Unfortunately, in that case, the term was applied to the mother of the subject of a birth certificate; in this case, the term applies to an as yet unmarried woman. Here is the context: XXXXXXX y XXXXXXX, el primero soltero, agricultor en pequeño….., la segunda soltera, DE OFICIOS DOMÉSTICOS, de dieciséis años de edad, originaria y vecina de esta villa de Nacionalidad Salvardoreña…contrajeron matrimonio..." She’s not a housewife yet, you see, just a girl who stays home and helps around the house, I would imagine. It is a very small town, so I don't think she's a maid. Any ideas?

En este preciso momento estoy traduciendo una partida de nacimiento (de El Salvador). Tiene cierta lógica pensar que si la mujer no está casada no se deba usar "housewife", pero a veces la lógica no se impone en asuntos del idioma. No veo por qué no usar "housewife"/"homemaker". "Sin ocupación" (No occupation) me parece un sinsentido, con tus disculpas. Muchas mujeres salvadoreñas amas de casa se sentirían ofendidas si se refieren a ellas como personas "sin ocupación". Eso podría indicar que no hacen nada. Algo muy lejos de la realidad.

Hi Kathleen - unless the lady whose marriage certificate it is can explain exactly what this job is, it sounds like she just did work around the house as we all do. Is she just 'unemployed' really?

Well, I finally decided to just ask the lady whose marriage certificate this is, and she never worked as a maid, so now how do I translate it? Remeber, she is unmarried at the time the information about her is noted for the marriage certificate.

The way I see it, a "housewife" is married and does domestic work for her own family. A "maid" is someone who is hired to do domestic work for a family other than her own; whether or not she is married is irrelevant.

I think "domestic worker" is the most general term and best fit for "de oficios domésticos", which is more general than "ama de casa" or "criada".

Let me get this straight. In a different entry, the translation for "de oficios was "housewife" (see http://www.proz.com/kudoz/spanish_to_english/certificates_di... when it's a married woman, but if she's unmarried, she's a maid?
