Spanish term or phrase: Carácter:ajeno
Bueno, poco a poco.

Outside courses

Explanation:
I think this translation may require more than a simple phrase. The literal translation is "free configuration credits," but this may not be readily understood by English speakers, because the term comes from the Spanish university system. It can include courses taken outside the student's major or degree area, or it can even include courses taken from other universities. Here is a reference that may help you with this and more terms in this area.

non-major electives / electives outside a student's major discipline

Explanation:
It seems to be the same as 'de libre configuración'. Note "ajenos a sus disciplinas de estudios" in the definition below.

each Study Plan as determined by the Spanish Ministry of Education at the state level.
Asignaturas no troncales – Non-core classes: the study plan content determined
freely by each Spanish university and these are divided into the following types of
classes: obligatory, electives within the major and electives outside the major.
Asignaturas obligatorias – Obligatory classes: classes which the university has
determined to be obligatory for students in each major.
Asignaturas optativas – Elective classes within majors: classes which the
university offers in all majors and which students may select freely as counting to major
degree graduation requirements.
Asignaturas de libre elección/libre configuración – Elective classes outside
the major: classes a student may select outside the major according to his/her own
criteria; credits earned count towards satisfying graduation degree requirements. http://www.ciee.org/studyseville/documents/7.Vocabularioacad...

Extracurricular

Explanation:
Another option. I understand I often refers to activities such as sports but it is also widely used as "extracurricular courses":

Extracurricular courses are course that are not part of the student’s academic progression plan and for which no credit granted. Examples of extracurricular courses are student orientation, homeroom, clubs and activities, or other enrichment courses.

The following is a list of extracurricular (non-credit) arts classes offered at MIT.
http://web.mit.edu/arts/learn/extracurricular.html

This extra course does not count towards their GPA and is therefore an extracurricular course.

The sociocultural sector also runs a large number of extracurricular courses for people of all ages.

By adding extracurricular courses to the mix, our students have many opportunities to pursue personal interests and discover hidden talents.
