Does the word Department in this context translate as State or Region? The translation is for Australia.

What you said it's true about the new Regions, but people still use the Departamento word. It has not become obsolete. They mostly use it on books, news, but a change like that will take decades before peruvians get used to "Las Regiones" because some of the regions contain 1 1/2 or 2 "Departamentos". But I personally think that if on the birth certificate says Departamento then we should translate it as it is. If it says Region then as Region.

So, in short, I was not incorrect. I then understood what you were trying to achieve from the beginning, and that was to find an equivalent based on the Australian context! Sometimes, there is no equivalent as different countries are made up differently. When in doubt, sometimes the literal translation works. Anyway, no harm done! I did understand from the outset then. It is not province Taña, please refer to context provided. (Department: LIMA , Province: LIMA). If I translate it as PROVINCE it would be a repetition and a mistake. It would read: Province: LIMA, Province: LIMA.
As you have mentioned in your discussion, and as Gladys has also mentioned, the term Department might be a better option. Sorry about the confusion, I really appreciate your help and your information has been helpful. My initial intention was to find a term for the Spanish word DEPARTAMENTO that is understood and used in Australia. Australia is divided in States, not it Departments, that is why I mentioned the Terms Region and State. Once again, thank you for your help.

As there is a lack of context, I am no longer sure what the query really is. I didn't suggest "department" in view of the above comment (being obsolete), hence my quandry what to say now. The only other thing I see is to use "region"; I had made two other suggestions "municipality" and then as Ana said "she thinks it may refer to the electoral district/department", I then said leave "Department". I am afraid I don´t understand (and Wikipedia is incorrect!). Hope this explains my confusion.
I am from Peru. District (distrito): Jesus Maria, Province (Provincia): Lima, and Department (Departamento): Lima. I hope this helps. The department of Lima has several Provinces and each province has several districts.
Clearly, I have not understood your question, and that is why I hesitated. Why then not a straight translation of the word "Departamento" - i.e. Department? Remember, you have the entire context in front of you with all the headings. I am not sure why you may? (and I am not saying you are) complicating things and using region/state (región/estado). Sorry, that is why perhaps it is better for some other colleague to provide their opinions. HTH.
Thank you for your answer and help. Sorry I can't offer more context, the rest of the document is a birth certificate with other info that doesn't relate to the word. It cannot be "province" since it would be a repetition (please refer to the context I sent in my last entry), I think that it refers to electoral district/department. Municipality sounds right.

Before the 2002 changeover, the province of Lima (which is basically the city of Lima) was part of the Lima department, and the city of Callao had the special status of Provincia Constitucional (constitutional province).
If I understand your query correctly, and in the absence of context, what I have seen on Peruvian documents is "Province", or "Municipality". My initial and gut feeling is "Departamento" equates to the "Province", but I will leave it open to other more learned colleagues to confirm. HTH!
