flow-through or bind-elute mode
Explanation:
This is referring to HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography). Flow-through mode means that the column is being flushed with solvent. Bind-elute mode means the elements in the sample are being seperated by absorbing (BINDING) to the column (the inside of the copper pipes) at different points along the tubings length. The various chemicals in the sample are distinguished by their retention time (how long it takes each to pass through the column after being "slowed down" inside the column), it tells us something about their chemical structure. ELUTING is when the chemicals subsequently come out of the other end of the column, the time taken for this is the retention time.
