Beatriz Sarlo discussing the film Silvia Prieto.
Is this best translated as self-conscious or self-aware, or something else? To describe someone as being 'one of the most self-conscious directors' sounds very odd to me in English - I think its primary meaning is shy! But is self-aware right here? I'm just not sure, I feel like she's saying something like he's very perceptive, aware of what he's doing, etc and I want to capture this succintly in English.
María Teresa Taylor Oliver: 4:11pm Aug 19, 2005: self-referential: referring to itself; especially: concerned with the mental attitudes and creative processes that brought it into existence - Lucy Phillips (asker): 6:44pm Aug 19, 2005: with respect to self-referential - I'm not sure that this is what is being said: at another point (talking about a short story by Rejtman about a checkout girl) the author says 'No hay nada en él más lejano que el mundo de los reponedores de supermercado. No es un cineasta de origen popular...' She never suggests that Rejtman draws on his own experiences. - amj_services: 2:01pm Aug 21, 2005: I believe that as translators we have to say what the author (Sarlo) wanted to say, which is "self-aware". But even if we do some research about Rejtman and his work, we would still find out that "self-aware" is the correct term here......... - amj_services: 2:08pm Aug 21, 2005: ......a link added here by MargaEsther includes an interview with Rejtman. Please check it out: http://www.cineindependiente.com.ar/encuentros/?cod=260&PHPS...
Both the interviewer and Rejtman comment on the fact....... - amj_services: 2:12pm Aug 21, 2005: .....that he is not an autobiographical, self-referential author. I hope it helps! -
Thanks all - and particularly to Alicia for her very 'lucid' thoughts! I actually sent the translation using 'one of the most self-aware', my original choice. My editor has changed it to 'self-reflective', saying that 'the latter [self aware] seems a bit too weak for the sort of consciousness Sarlo ascribes to Rejtman' 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
