Aggregate circuits are the “link circuits” that carry the multiplexed traffic between muxes. Aggregate circuits can be synchronous serial, Inmarsat/ISDN or IP based.
Tributary circuits are the customer side or “feeder” circuits to the mux. These can be phone lines, serial ports, built in Ethernet/IP, MPEG or ISDN S/T extender ports.
