Spanish term or phrase: conocer en terreno
This is an interview with a visiting IT executive from a Chilean university about IT options that he has learned at a center (not sure where it's located). By environments, he is referring to various university IT installation types.

I think this means "to learn as they go along" or "to learn on the fly". Can somebody confirm?

Thanks, Teresita. I used "experience first hand", because neither "know" or "see" work well in the context of "environments".

Notes to answerer
Asker: I'm assuming "at first hand" is British. We omit the "at" in the US.
