Spanish to English translations [PRO] Computers (general) / Website software
Spanish term or phrase:ficha/archivo/registro
It seems difficult to distinguish clearly in English between these concepts. "Ficha" can be file or record, "Archivo" is usually file and "Registro" is often record (as in a database). Any suggestions how I can translate these 3 terms for software, as they are used distinctly in Spanish. Thanks!
Explanation: From you context they already seem to be using ficha and archive indiscriminately, and being from catalan I suspect that ficha should really be fichero, and registro record (in the database sense) unless the context makes it absolutely clear that registro refers to the Windows Registry.
In the context of "Adjuntar archivo de metatags / Gestor de archivos / Adjuntar archivo" you could of course attach a folder and have a folder manager but on balance of probabilities it seems rather more likely to be file.
...comment, I find in many documents that Spaniards seem to have an aversion to using the same term all the time, presumably from fear of seeming repetitive, and that this can cause confusion, much more so than in English writing.

The original text is in Catalan (with no context - a list of phrases) so the words are actually "fitxa" and "fitxer". But I think it's the same problem as "ficha", "fichero" and "archivo" in Spanish.
Hi Tracy, I don´t think it's possible to give you a translation for each word ,as each can mean different things depending on the context they're used in (but as you say, archivo=file and registro=record normally, or maybe 'entry')
archive-file and registro-record, these are standard IT terms, but the problem is ficha. I have found 'card' as in a card containing a program but really it is a question of divining from the context.

Asker: Thanks, Isabel, though I think "archivo" is usually used as "file" in computer-speak, with "carpeta" being used for folder. As you say, "archive" tends to be used for older, paper-based collections and not computers.
