extinguishes

Explanation:
Given some poetic freedom.

The trip extinguishes,
like the candles

that remember the dead
in the darkness of the tunnels.

That is one poetic company!

I interpret it as something that slowly ends (like a candle), but hasn't ended yet.

disagree  Caroline Devitt: Sprry, but 'extinguish' is a transitive verb.

agree  eski: Here, here!"Roses are red;violets are blue, Candles extinguish and I thank you"... :))

-> Thank you, Eski!!! One day I might write you a poem (given some poetic freedom!) Saludos, hermano. Roses are red is actually one of my favourite James Patterson novels!

neutral  Lisa McCarthy: Don´t think you can 'extinguish' a trip - just doesn´t sound right.

-> I agree, but: It's poetry and it's about a concentration camp. My metaphor is that their lives are slowly extinguished like a candle.

I don´t think it will be easy to come up with a verb that will fit for both 'journey' and 'candles' so you may have to look at an alternative way of putting it across.

Maybe something like:

The journey has ended
and the candles burn no more
in remembrance of the dead
in the tunnels' darkness

" has reached its end "

Explanation:
" The journey has reached its end..."

I think it's important to use a metaphor that works for both the journey and the "candles"...

Saludos :))
