Hola. Estoy traduciendo un texto sobre los restaurantes de Cataluña y una de las frases es <lubina al aceite de carbón>. No hay más contexto.

No he podido encontrar su traducción en inglés, ni soy capaz de imaginar qué podría ser.

Muchas gracias a todos.

Thanks. I guess I'll go with this one because there seems to be some evidence that other people have translated it as "charcoal oil". I think I might put something like "oil flavoured with charcoal" though.

Thanks to everyone for your input.

Asker: Thanks. The thing is, I'm not sure because when I looked up "coal oil" as a possible translation, I saw that it is used for illumination purposes and is similar to or even synonymous with "kerosene", which I can't imagine cooking with... Do you think there could be another possible translation?

neutral Carol Gullidge: unless it's used as a fuel for cooking ON/OVER. Otherwise, I'd imagine that coal oil is highly toxic!

charcoal oil

Explanation:
'Coal oil' sounds very unappetising! Carbón here means charcoal. Here's one recipe for aceite de carbón:
Prender el carbón en llama hasta que se formen brasas y sumergir las brasas en el aceite de girasol. Dejarlo en reposo 12 h y colarlo con una estameña

Presumably the charcoal embers impart a smoky flavour to the oil.
A creative English menu writer might just call it "our special Spanish oil with a unique smoky flavour".
There's a French variant in which roasted pine nuts are used instead of charcoal.
