Geographical indications and traditional specialities
Three EU schemes known as PDO (protected designation of origin), PGI (protected geographical indication) and TSG (traditional speciality guaranteed) promote and protect names of quality agricultural products and foodstuffs.
The following EU schemes encourage diverse agricultural production, protect product names from misuse and imitation and help consumers by giving them information concerning the specific character of the products:
* PDO - covers agricultural products and foodstuffs which are produced, processed and prepared in a given geographical area using recognised know-how.
* PGI – covers agricultural products and foodstuffs closely linked to the geographical area. At least one of the stages of production, processing or preparation takes place in the area.
* TSG - highlights traditional character, either in the composition or means of production
I can second that. For international trade fairs in the fruit and vegetables sector, I found this as an official term in a TM and used in the way James describes.

I recently had to translate this, and the end client (an EU agency) advised me that this is how it needed to be translated:
'Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status' initially, and 'PDO status' thereafter. Of course, that was relevant to my text...

And it's "designation of origin". You wil find it in loads of official European documents on fruit and vegetable production as well as the IATE glossary entries.
