agree  Kate Major: Oup - this posted without my comment - just wanted to say, most definitely a side dish, given the context.

agree  Pablo Julián Davis: en definitiva, en este contexto es 'side dish' o simplemente 'side(s)'. en otros contextos podría traducirse con 'garnish' (por ejemplo el tomate o pepino picado u otras cositas que se le echa al gazpacho)

agree  neilmac: Works fine in this case. Not wishing to be pedantic, but your ref defines it as "plato adicional " whereas the query text says "no es un plato adicional" .

As distinct from a 'side order', which would be your 'plato adicional'.

--------------------------------------------------

An 'accompaniment' is usually served on the same plate as the meat, fish or other "preparación principal", although in 'posh' restaurants it may also be served on a separate plate (or in a dish from which it is served across to the 'main' plate).
The main difference between an 'accompaniment' and a 'side dish/order' is that the first is included in the price of the main component of the meal, whilst a 'side order' is charged extra.

neutral  Pablo Julián Davis: me parece excelente tu explicación! (sólo que en muchos casos, el precio del plato principal incluye dos platos acompañantes que sin embargo se llaman 'sides')
4 hrs

agree  neilmac: Totally agree. This is unequivocally the best option IMO. Although "side dish" and "X with Y on the side" are common currency, your option avoids any confusion.

Dish served with your choice of .......

Explanation:
La guarnición del menù es lo que acompaña al mismo.
En este caso incluye varias opciones a elección.
La guarniciòn + el menù se sirven juntos por cuanto la guarnición no es un plato adicional.

trimmings

Explanation:
This may be more common in UK English, I don't know. The term originally comes from dressmaking.
"With this, you must have all the trimmings: roast potatoes cooked in beef or goose fat, sprouts or cabbage, perhaps a few carrots stewed in ..."

--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 15 hrs (2011-08-05 14:49:40 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------

And "roast beef with all the trimmings" gets over half a million google hits. Not that this means anything.

--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 15 hrs (2011-08-05 14:51:03 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------

NB: "trimmings" is plural.

Although "accompaniments", "sides" or "side dishes" would probably work better for the menu list in question.

a helping of . . .*

Explanation:
*If this is a "family" or not very formal restaurant, "helping" would work. It could even be combined with a few other ideas already provided such as "served with a helping of" or just "with a serving of". If it is a more elegant restaurant, "served with a choice of" (suggested by HM) would solve the problem. Like FVS, I was tempted by "garnish / garnishing"; however, despite his examples, in English it is normally used for a very small (and decorative) addition to the plate.
