VictorBece (asker): 6:40pm Jun 11, 2004: El término cobra un peso especial en América Latina, relativo al peso que tuvieron ese tipo de compañías antes de que el neoliberalismo pusiera de moda las privatizaciones. Por eso añadí, "en comparación con América Latina" en donde las paraestatales pueden llegar a ser "la compañía más grande". En todo caso tu proposición me resultó muy útil y la discusión enriquecedora. Gracias de nuevo.
Juan Jacob: 6:50pm Jun 11, 2004: Totalmente de acuerdo: el 98 % de las paraestatales en México fue privatizado a partir de mediados de los años 80. Todas fueron a dar a manos privadas y, para colmo, extranjeras. Gracias a Reagan, Thatcher y a nuestros presidentes... ehhh... sumisos. -

I would put it that way: in fact, it's not "Companies working in direct partnership with the State", it's a company belonging to the state, very commun, in the past, in Mexico. Pemex (Petroleos Mexicanos, largest company in Mexico) is a paraestatal (not para-estatal). I've done my university degree about "empresas paraestatales en Mexico" (I've got no accents, please excuse me).
