En una certificación académica cuando aún no ha llegado el tiempo de hacer el examen, por ejemplo la fecha de la certificación es de este mes de mayo y el examen es en junio entonces pone pendiente porque aún no se ha podido presentar el alumno

-> Sí, tienes razón; si no ha llegado el tiempo de hacer el examen, se pone "pending". Si es el alumno quien no ha llegado, se pone un "incomplete". Creo que la pregunta tiene que ver con el primer caso, entonces tienes razón.
