My problem here is that I´m not too sure of the meaning of 'a partir de' in this context. Are these 'protagonistas' and
'prestigiosos profesionales' giving some king of input to the course or are the students just learning about them? Need to have this wrapped up within the next hour!

It's not clear from the original if the "protagonists" physically present things, although it doesn't seem probable. At any rate, "drawing on", "with the support of" or "supported by" all contain this element of ambiguity, too. :->

Explanation: Wouldn't this just be the common English expression, 'From the [protaganistas]... to the [prestigiosos profesionales]'.
ie they're both part of the content of the course.

Hi Lisa, well, just based on that passage I can't see anything that indicates they are active agents in delivering the course, and if it's a course description its probably better to err on the safe side.

Se refiere a que "tomarán como referencia" (para obtener conocimientos), a los protagonistas singulares del mundo o a profesionales o artistas del arte contemporáneo.

Por cierto, lo que toman como referencia son las obras/arte/exposiciones de los artistas, por lo que éstos no están involucrados en la enseñanza de los estudiantes. Obviamente, Picasso, Miró o Tàpies no van a darles lecciones de nada, entre otros motivos, porque ya han fallecido... ¡¡¡gran pérdida para el mundo artistico!!! Saludos
