Work done by a voluntary organisation in a cancer hospital:

nuestro mayor aporte es apadrinar niños del policlínico y darles apoyo durante todo su proceso con la enfermedad, entregar desayuno a los niños y sus padres cada vez que asisten al hospital y conseguir regalos para las fiestas del día del niño y Navidad.

Normally I would translate this as provide support, but that comes just afterwards 'darles apoyo'.

Thanks bcsantos! I think 'lend a helping hand' fits perfectly in the context, with no other connotations that could be misinterpreted. In this case is definately not sponsor, no money is changing hands, support is being provided.
