Spanish term or phrase: exámenes extraordinarios y ordinarios
In a university student's transcript.

"Ordinario" exams are where the student took the course and wrote the exams, and "extraordinario"
is where he got the credit by just passing the exam, without attending the course.

How is it said in English?

Thanks for any help received

Another alternative (the student did not need to attend the subject but convalidated credits by examination).

Free examination (examen libre).
(The student did not enroll the subject but paid exam fees and convalidated the credits.)

Both exams are considered extraordinarios.

Thanks to everyone who helped, however I was looking for the very brief term (maybe an abbreviation) that would appear on the transcript.

regular [exams] and self-study exams

Explanation:
regular OR formal exams

"self-study exam" seems to be commonly used.

SEE FOLLOWING:
Credit Without Attending Formal Classes Guidelines

Students wishing to demonstrate proficiency may challenge some credit courses by taking a proficiency examination. Students must be in good standing and cannot have completed the course previously with a grade. A fee of $40 for each proficiency examination is payable to the campus cashier's office (located in the campus Student Services Office) prior to testing. A "T/P" will appear on the student's academic record after successful completion of the exam. Credit granted will not apply toward fulfillment of Metro's residency requirement of graduation. Credit awarded will usually not transfer to another college or university.

SEE ALSO:
Self-study sessions are an alternative way to earn course credits by passing final course exams without attending classroom or web-based training sessions. Not all courses are offered as self study.

All SELF-STUDY EXAMS are open book. Students are provided with study materials. Only ORPS course materials may be used as references at the exam.

Regular Exams and Re-Sits

Explanation:
I think that "extraordinario" means that the student hasn't passed the regular exam and needs to re-take the exam in order to earn credit for the course.
