Spanish term or phrase: una estrategia adaptada con la consiguiente elección del referente
I'm pretty stuck on "elección del referente". It's in reference to food safety management and control in a company handling food and challenges for operators involved. Here goes the text with the phrase in the second point.

"Los retos para los operadores privados son numerosos. El principal objetivo es aunar la conformidad y la competitividad en los mercados.
• Deben conocer el mercado y sus exigencias.
• Disponer de una estrategia adaptada con la consiguiente elección del referente."

This is my try on the second point:
"Have a strategy adapted with the subsequent selection thereof."

English translation:a targeted strategy
Explanation:
Spanish is notoriously long-winded. Rather than "a suitable/appropriate strategy with the consequent choice of target/reference" or similar, I'd simply call it "a targeted strategy" and consider the rest implicit.

PS: It's just my opinion, but I'd seriously reconsider the use of a legalistic-sounding term like "thereof" in a text of this nature.

agree  James A. Walsh: Good option. I'd be tempted to throw in the word "market" too, as in "a targeted market strategy"
