community meals center Explanation: I am basing my response on what we call "community meals" around here. Often there is a fee that is easily waived. My suggestion is more or less my own creation ---i.e. few Google hits. I did like the "community kitchen" answer, but this focuses more on the cooking, as someone mentioned, than on the provision of meals. |

community kitchen / (hot meal) food bank Explanation: Something like these may work in this context. https://www.communityfoodbank.org/programs-and-services/bran... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2016-04-17 21:47:00 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- For a word like 'merendero,' which may not immediately evoke images of poverty---with lines, of mostly men, for example, along the side of a church basement---one of the options I've proposed here may be especially useful, as they don't seem to come with the same history or associative load; that is, they seem part of a newer vocabulary in this context (at least in the US). I hope this helps! -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 23 hrs (2016-04-18 19:50:41 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Another option might 'hot meal sites'. The website below chose this descriptor for its list of six organizations: the names of three of which include the words 'food bank' interestingly enough, but all serve hot meals, and most (ftom their names) probably do more than just serve meals. Emergency Food Network Hot Meal Sites http://www.efoodnet.org/resources/hot-meal-sites/ -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 23 hrs (2016-04-18 20:24:27 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Errata: That's 'might be...' and 'from their names' :-) One final point: what makes this a special challenge of equivalence is that this (social) service is often part of a program or project, rather than the sole activity of a given institution. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 day6 mins (2016-04-18 20:37:48 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- In addition to the site provided by Christian (in References), here's another 'community kitchen' with no teaching involved. ***Bread of Life Community Kitchen*** Providence Ministries is fighting hunger in Georgia by serving fresh and hot meals prepared daily, and offering them for free to anyone who wants one, no questions asked... no one will be denied. Our community kitchen is open 365 days a year and serves 60-200 plates for any given meal. http://www.providenceministriesinc.com/get-help-now/free-hot... |
