Spanish term or phrase: gorro francés

This term crops up in a Venezuelan document describing a pre-heating tower, a device used in cement manufacture. The document even explains what it means: "gorro Francés: compuerta de alivio de gases de la torre precalentadora", so we know it's a relief valve for pre-heater tower gases, but how to translate it other than something very literal has me beat!
