La justificación de la utilización de este tipo de modelos es porque en los casos de zonas de inundación donde el flujo no tenga una dirección claramente marcada en el sentido del ***eje del río*** sino que la el flujo tiene además una componente transversal, como en las marismas, los casos de derivaciones laterales, zonas bifurcaciones o confluencias, cauces a estudiar por zona urbana, etc, puede llevar a equivocos o errores el establecimiento de mapas de inundación por medio del uso de modelos 1D independientes, los cuales consideran el flujo sólo en términos de secciones transversales representativas."
