Spanish term or phrase: retención topográfica
El depósito de relaves se localiza estratégicamente en una zona que posee las siguientes características:

 El suelo en este sector posee buena *retención topográfica*.
 El sector posee una topografía adecuada, ya que tiene una buena relación entre el volumen de la presa y capacidad de almacenamiento relativamente alta.

English translation:retention in terms of its topography
Explanation:
A high capacity for retention in terms of its topography.

I think this is really just trying to say that the topography of the ground in this area means that it is suitable for retaining a lot of water. I.e. the shape of the area where the construction will be located is well suited to storing up all the water (perhaps a naturally occurring basin or the like).

agree  Dr Neil Ashby: I tend to agree with you James, of course if Ernesto could provide a ref which isnt just an example of the Spanish usage then maybe I would agree with him. Ernesto there's the challenge - an English ref with an example of topographical retention??

neutral  Muriel Vasconcellos: See my reservations in the discussion above. 'Ground' can have topography, but I don't think 'soil' can.
