Explanation: I would have to ask an accountant for confirmation, but it appears that in Spain, at least, "inmovilizado" and "inmovilizaciones" are used interchangeably. I assume this is the case because both are translated as "fixed assets" in the Coopers & Lybrand "Diccionario de Informes Financieros", but especially because they seem to be used interchangeably in the Spanish Plan General de Contabilidad, which defines all of the standard account headings for accounting statements in Spain:
• GRUPO 2 - INMOVILIZADO
• 21. INMOVILIZACIONES INMATERIALES
• 22. INMOVILIZACIONES MATERIALES
o 229. Otro inmovilizado material.
• 23. INMOVILIZACIONES MATERIALES EN CURSO
o 239. Anticipos para inmovilizaciones materiales.
I personally can't see any difference implied, unless "inmovilizado" is the major heading and "inmovilizaciones" are the subgroups. This is implied in the following definition from the Diccionario de Derecho Bosch:
INMOVILIZADO
Conocido también como fijo, constituye una rúbrica o grupo de partidas del activo que figura en el balance de una sociedad anónima. Comprende cuatro grandes partidas: gastos de establecimiento, y tres inmovilizaciones (inmateriales, materiales y financieras). Las inmovilizaciones inmateriales se pueden, a su vez, desglosar en otras subpartidas: gastos de investigación y desarrollo, concesiones, patentes, licencias, marcas, fondo de comercio, anticipos. Las inmovilizaciones materiales se desglosan en terrenos y construcciones, instalaciones técnicas y maquinaria, etc. Las inmovilizaciones financieras abarcan, entre otras, las participaciones en sociedades del grupo, créditos a sociedades del grupo, acciones propias.
Ley de Sociedades Anónimas, artículos 175 y 176.

(Monday morning) I asked a friend here in Madrid who is an accountant about the difference between \"inmovilizado\" and \"inmovilizaciones\" as used, for example, in the Spanish Chart of Accounts shown above. She said that she had never realized that two different terms were being used and she assumes they are interchangeable, BUT since she is a \"junior\" accountant, she is going to check this with her jefe and report back.

Here is what she said: \"te confirmo lo que ya pensabamos: son palabras intercambiables, que no tienen ningún matiz especial. La cuenta 229 que se titula otro inmobilizado material recoge en la propia explicación del contenido que hay que incluir en esta cuenta: \"cualesquiera otras INMOBILIZACIONES materiales no incluidas en el las cuentas anteriores\", de lo que se presume que simplemente el que creó el plan general contable ha utilizado la palabra inmobilizado como término en singular e inmobilizaciones como el mismo término en plural.\"
